  • ESL Instructor, University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon, 2001 – 2003. Taught academic English full-time to matriculated international undergraduate and graduate students. Specialized in academic writing, academic reading, and an adjunct course to BA 101 (Business Administration). Conducted teacher-training workshops in Ukraine.

    ESL Instructor, Central Michigan University, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, 1997 – 2001. Taught academic English full-time to international undergraduate and graduate students.  Courses included integrated skills, reading, writing, pronunciation, listening, and grammar; also taught Freshman Composition and Modern Grammar for the English Department. Responsible for curriculum development and creating/administering placement and exit tests, and supervising the student teaching of students in the MATESOL program. Gave workshops for the Writing Center staff on coping with international students’ writing, the College of Business Administration faculty on intercultural awareness, and incoming international students in the MBA program.

    Foreign Language Instructor (Japanese and French), Central Michigan University, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, 1997 – 2001. Taught Japanese 101 and 102, and French 101: basic language skills (conversation, grammar, reading, and writing) and cultural information. Classes included language lab component. Advisor, Japanese Cultural Club.

    ESL Trainer, Sumitomo Electric Industries, Osaka, Japan, 1995 – 1997. Taught business English and cross-cultural skills to company employees. Designed short- and long-term courses. Hired, trained, and supervised part-time staff members. Edited and rewrote business correspondence, conference abstracts, and papers; conducted pre-departure training of overseas employees.

    Japanese Trainer, CME Corporation, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, 1999 – 2001. Taught Japanese language and cross-cultural skills to American office and factory employees at a joint Japanese-American company. Emphasis on business communication skills.

    ESL Instructor, Mid-Pacific Institute, Honolulu, Hawai’i, 1993 – 1994. Taught international students at a private jr. high/high school. Developed curricula, advised students, ran a homebase of American students (including some instruction), and participated in a wide variety of campus activities such as field trips, annual fundraising events, and enrichment activities. Advisor, International Students’ Club.

    ESL Instructor, Hawai’i English Language Program, University of Hawai’i/Manoa, Honolulu, Hawai’i, 1991 – 1993. Taught diverse ESL classes including academic writing, American culture through the media, and TOEFL preparation. Conducted testing and placement of students, advised students, gave teacher training workshops, and ran end-of-term graduations. Supervised the student teaching of graduate students from the UH ESL program.  Chair, Writing Curriculum Committee; advisor, Student Activities Committee. 

    French Instructor, Kaimuki Community School, Honolulu, Hawai’i, 1991 – 1992. Taught conversational French (levels I and II) to adults at an adult education center. Created curriculum and all instructional materials.

    ESL Instructor, American Language Center, Rabat, Morocco, 1990 – 1991. Taught 4-skills courses to Moroccan adults. Designed and constructed supplementary classroom materials, tested and evaluated students, and designed curricula and examinations. Taught intensive academic English to members of various Moroccan Ministries bound for US graduate school programs.

    French Instructor, Concordia Language Villages, Bemidji, Minnesota, summer 1990. Taught French language, culture, and customs to high school students in a language-immersion summer camp.  Planned and taught 120 hours of French language courses (accredited by the North Central Association for Colleges and Schools), presented French cultural information, and lead camp activities such as music, sports, and skits.

    ESL Instructor, The Culture Center, Mibu, Japan, 1988 – 1989; and King’s American English, Narita, Japan, 1986 – 1988. Taught conversational and business English to Japanese school students, company employees, and medical personnel. Developed teaching materials and designed courses. Also taught some French classes, edited and proofread medical manuscripts submitted for publication, and assisted with hiring and training new teachers.
