• Nice to meet you!

I'm an author, editor, teacher, and teacher trainer in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). I taught English, French, and Japanese for over 20 years in Asia, Africa, and the US. My MA in TESL is from the School for International Training in Vermont.

I currently write and edit English language teaching materials and textbooks, and conduct teacher training workshops. My areas of specialty and interest include teaching writing, teaching reading, business English, academic English, testing, and humor. I'm a frequent plenary speaker at international conferences, and a regular blogger for Teacher Talk at Azar Grammar.

Feel free to browse around the site to learn more about what I do. If you want to contact me, you can message me here or find me on social media.

  • I give short and long-term workshops and training sessions (1.5 hours to a month long) to English teachers. I'll travel to any country that lets me in. Recently I've given workshops in curriculum development, classroom management, testing and test-item writing, business English, and the teaching of writing, reading, vocabulary, listening, speaking, and study skills. Contact me if you need something else; if I can't do it, I can probably recommend someone who can. My workshops emphasize practical, hands-on training with immediate classroom applications. Click for a selection of recent workshop titles and locations.

  • Textbooks! I write them. I've authored and co-authored over 20 textbooks for students of English, including coursebooks, skills books, business English, and TOEFL. I write for publishers such as Macmillan, Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, University of Michigan Press, Pearson, and I also self-publish my own materials. Click for a selection of titles I'm proud of.

  • After working in-house as a Senior Development Editor for Cambridge University Press, I now freelance on developmental editing, production editing, copy editing, and proofreading. I'm experienced with print and digital/online products. I catch the little stuff (and the big stuff), hit deadlines, and work well with authors. Click for a selection of titles I've worked on.

  • I provide developmental editing and copy editing/line editing. I specialize in historical fiction, thrillers, and romance. I'll work with publishers and indie authors. Click to see a selection of book titles I've edited.

Note for 2019: Not currently accepting new clients.

  • I have over 30 years experience teaching English as a second/foreign language, and additional experience teaching French. I'm available for short-term (only) assignments with a preference for interesting places or innovative programs. Click to see my previous work history.

  • I love conferences! They're a wonderful place to share knowledge, research, questions, ideas, and classroom applications, as well as for teachers to connect and motivate one another. I'm available for plenary and keynote presentations as well as practical workshops. Member of The Fair List. Click to see some of my recent presentations.

  • In 2012 I founded Wayzgoose Press, a micropress specializing in educational materials, literary and genre fiction, and nonfiction. Do you have a quality manuscript or idea that needs to see the light of day? I might be interested in hearing about it. What on earth is a wayzgoose? You'll have to click through to the site to find out.

  • Here are some sites from other people and organizations that I think are of high quality and useful for teachers and writers. Click to explore.
